A book once owned by George Washington containing his personal annotated copy of the U.S. Constitution and a copy of the Bill of Rights sold for nearly $10 million at a New York auction Friday.
According to the Associated Press, the 223-year-old book says ?President of the United States? on the cover and is marked up with brackets and notes Washington made about the responsibilities of the president.
The record-setting $9.8 million bid is the most ever paid for an American book or historical document, Reuters reported. It was purchased by the Mount Vernon Ladies? Association of the Union, a nonprofit organization that maintains the Mount Vernon estate that was once Washington?s home.
Christie?s auction house described the book as being in near-pristine condition, according to Reuters. It was printed for Washington specially during his first year in office.
According to the New York Post, the bidding was over in just four minutes.
The previous record for a similar document was set in 2009 when an autographed copy of Abraham Lincoln?s 1864 election victory speech went for $3.4 million.
