VOLUNTEERS from NQ Community Transport drove 33,795 sick, elderly or disabled passengers a staggering total of 445,116km last year, earning them a double whammy of nominations in the Pride of Australia Medals.
The small not-for-profit charity group, run by TOTTS Inc, has been nominated in the Community Spirit category, while founder and 2011 Townsville Citizen of the Year Garth Harrigan has been nominated as an individual.
Operations manager Allan Wynne nominated Mr Harrigan for a medal, but wasn't aware the entire group was in line for one too.
"It's very exciting," he said.
"I was quite proud and honoured to nominate Garth."
Nominations have opened for the Pride of Australia Medals, offering the chance for our community's unsung heroes to be recognised on the national stage.
Proudly partnered by Network Ten, supported by the Townsville Bulletin and now in its eighth year, the medals celebrate ordinary Australians who do extraordinary things.
In 2012, the people who have made you proud can be nominated in one of 10 categories.
The categories, described in full at website prideofaustralia.com.au, are: Outstanding Bravery, Courage, Heroism, Community Spirit, Child of Courage, Young Leader, Care and Compassion, Inspiration, Environment, and Fair Go.
Medals will be awarded in each category at a state ceremony with the winners eligible to win Gold Medals at a national ceremony in Sydney on October 27.
