Iowa leaders Romney, Paul leave stage to rivals (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? The two leading Republican presidential candidates in Iowa left the stage to their rivals to make their final pitches to voters just three days before the state's Republican caucus.

Mitt Romney was to campaign in New Hampshire on Saturday while Ron Paul was taking time off in his home state of Texas. Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum and Rick Perry all remained in Iowa, touring the state as they worked to win over the many still-undecided conservative voters.

Romney and Paul are absent, but they're poised to do well here. Both are leading in polls and have the money and organization to turn supporters out to caucus Tuesday night.

But with just days until voters begin to select the GOP nominee, the other candidates are still fighting in a volatile race that's seen candidate after candidate rise only to quickly fall. The same polls suggest large numbers of Iowa Republicans could change their minds before the first test of the 2012 campaign.

Santorum is the latest to draw intense interest. He has been rising in polls and drawing larger and larger crowds in recent days. The once resurgent Gingrich has fallen behind as negative ads have battered him on the airwaves and in mailboxes.

Bachmann's campaign has struggled. She's lost key staffers and some activists have urged her to drop out of the race. Perry, meanwhile, has spent millions on TV ads and is continuing a bus tour that consumed much of December.

Romney will return to Iowa later Saturday and will hold events in the western part of the state in areas he won when he first ran for president four years ago.

On Friday, he focused on Paul ? his closest rival in recent polling ? calling the Texas congressman out of step with most Republicans.

"I don't think Ron Paul represents the mainstream of Republican thought with regards to issues, particularly in foreign policy," Romney told Fox News.

Paul planned to spend the weekend out of Iowa. Campaigning Friday, he said he would have trouble voting for any of his Republican rivals if they won the nomination.

"They all are part of the status quo," he said.

Gingrich, now struggling, has said he wouldn't vote for Paul.

The usually combative former House speaker made headlines Friday when he broke down and wept as he talked about his mother's end-of-life illnesses.

"I do policy much easier than I do personal," Gingrich told an audience of women as he tried to regain his composure. The tears flowed as he responded to questions about his mother from a pollster and longtime political ally.

"My whole emphasis on brain science comes in directly from dealing with the real problems of real people," he said, his face distorting as he began to cry. "And so it's not a theory. It's, in fact, my mother."

Kathleen "Kit" Gingrich died in 2003. She was 77.

Whatever the impact of Gingrich's tears on the race for the White House, the video clip seemed destined to be played repeatedly on television and the Internet.

Brock Lesnar Retires From UFC After Loss to Alistair Overeem

Brock Lesnar went down hard against kickboxer Alistair Overeem in the first round at UFC 141 last night. A few minutes later, he announced his retirement.

The former heavyweight champion finished his own meteoric mixed martial arts career on a losing note at Friday's Ultimate Fighting Championship event.

Lesnar retired from the UFC after Overeem stopped him with one vicious kick to the body at 2:26 of the first round in their much-touted heavyweight bout.

"Tonight is the last time you'll see me in the octagon," Lesnar said.

That leaves the UFC heading into 2012 without its biggest star.

Even though he fought only seven times in the UFC, Lesnar was a pay-per-view audience magnet because of his compelling past as a WWE "champion."

He reigned as heavyweight champ, headlined UFC 100, generated the most Internet traffic of any MMA fighter and actually has fights left on his contract.

UFC President Dana White and Chairman Lorenzo Fertitta took the high road with Lesnar even after the fighter blew off the post-fight news conference.

White said, "When a guy decides he wants to retire, you let him do it. This is not, 'Go hit a ball with a stick for the next two or three years on your way out.'"

"This is the real deal, guys. ?We'll figure it out." He said regardless of how many fights Lesnar has on his contract, "Doesn't matter. If he's done, he's done."

Avastin for ovarian cancer slows tumors but fails to prolong life

Even these modest results energized patient advocates, who point to the lack of new treatments for ovarian cancer, which causes some 15,000 annual deaths in the United States as the eighth most common cancer among women.

?While we are looking for that silver bullet, this is a gift that shouldn?t be overlooked,? said Karen Orloff Kaplan, chief executive of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance.

Data on survival are still being collected, but the results are probably too disappointing for the drug?s maker, Genentech, to seek Food and Drug Administration approval of Avastin for ovarian cancer, said company spokeswoman Charlotte Arnold. The company, however, did receive approval this month from European drug authorities to market Avastin for ovarian cancer treatment.

Both of the studies hinted that patients with advanced ovarian cancer may benefit more than patients with earlier stages.

?There are likely to be subsets of patients with very advanced ovarian cancer who will experience a survival benefit as long as they?re being treated with Avastin,? said Robert A. Burger, an oncologist at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia who helped lead the second study published Thursday.

But sorting out patients who might benefit from those who won?t is impossible at present. ?We desperately need to figure out a way to predict the folks who are going to respond to the drug versus the folks who will only get side effects of the drug,? said Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society. Studies searching for such a test are ongoing.

Some hail small benefits

In a disease in which fewer than half of patients survive their diagnosis for five years, even the small benefit seen in the studies pushed researchers to herald the results as significant. ?We have to consider it as a potential new treatment,? Oza said.

Other experts immediately pushed back on that assertion, saying the absence of a survival benefit disqualifies Avastin as a treatment except in very advanced cases.

?Our practice does not use Avastin in newly diagnosed [ovarian cancer] patients,? said Ursula A. Matulonis, director of gynecologic oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. ?My opinion is not changing.?

The smaller of the two studies published Thursday, dubbed ICON7, followed 1,500 women in 11 countries. All received standard chemotherapy, and half received Avastin for up to 10 months after chemotherapy. In the Avastin patients, the drug halted the growth of their tumors for an extra month and a half.

Study: Indoor Tanning Linked With Early Onset of Skin Cancer (Time.com)

Given that indoor tanning beds were officially classified as a human carcinogen in 2009 -- up there with cigarettes and asbestos -- it should be fairly obvious that frequent tanning-booth exposure would increase your risk of skin cancer.

Indeed, the evidence linking indoor tanning with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma, one of the more common forms of the disease, is "convincing," according to the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer. But the research concerning tanning beds and basal cell carcinoma, the third and most frequent major type of skin cancer -- which accounts for some 80% of all skin cancer cases in the U.S. -- has thus far been inconsistent. (See pictures of a photographer's intimate account of her mother's cancer ordeal.)

Basal cell carcinoma, a slow-growing cancer, has traditionally been a disease of middle age. But it's been appearing with increasing frequency in people under 40, especially in women -- a demographic that also happens to like indoor tanning -- suggesting a link. So researchers at the Yale School of Public Health sought to study the association.

The study included 376 people under 40, who had been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma between 2006 and 2010. They were matched with a control group of 390 dermatology patients who were diagnosed with minor skin conditions like cysts and warts. All participants had skin biopsies, and all were drawn from a Yale University database.

The researchers interviewed each participant about their UV exposure -- both in tanning beds and outdoors. They also asked about their history of sunburns, sunscreen use, family history of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, and their self-reported eye, skin and hair color.

The conclusion: people who had ever used a tanning booth were 69% more likely to develop early-onset basal cell carcinoma than never tanners. Those who used tanning booths more regularly -- for at least six years -- were more than twice a likely to develop basal cell carcinoma, compared with never tanners.

The study found that women were far more devoted than men to indoor tanning, which might help explain why 70% of all early onset basal cell carcinomas occur in females. The authors concluded that about 27% of cases of early onset disease -- including 43% of cases in women -- could be prevented if people simply stopped using tanning booths.

That's a tall order, considering that some 30 million Americans use indoor tanning beds each year. Policy changes, such as the recent California ban on teen tanning, may help, the authors suggest. So would behavioral interventions aimed at women -- at least one study in 2010 found that the best way to get young women to tan less was to warn them about the skin-wrinkling effects of tanning-bed exposure, not the risk of skin cancer.

"Importantly, indoor tanning is a behavior that individuals can change. In conjunction with the findings on melanoma, our results for [basal cell carcinoma] indicate that reducing indoor tanning could translate to a meaningful reduction in the incidence of these two types of skin cancer," said Leah M. Ferrucci, first author of the paper and a postdoctoral fellow at the Yale School of Public Health, in a statement.

Cloth iPhone app creates a photo catalog of your sartorial selections (Appolicious)

Gone are the days of longing for your own digital closet. Cloth is the latest clothing-cataloging app for iPhone and iPod Touch, offering a simple, user-friendly interface for the current on-sale price of 99 cents.

Although I wouldn?t normally spend money on an app of this sort, what I do like about Cloth is that it requires no account or registration to use its service. The app?s premise is basic: Take a photo of your outfit of the day, write yourself a note, and tag the outfit with whatever words you like. You can select a category for the outfit, such as everyday, vacation or work, or tap the ?Love It? button to add the OOTD to your favorites list. Cloth will store your image and notes, as well as filter the outfit into its respective categories for later looks. Cloth also offers built-in sharing to Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr, as long as you?ve provided your credentials in the in-app settings panel.

There?s a game aspect to Cloth, which provides points and badges for continued use of the app and for sharing outfits across social media. Although I?m sure reward-hungry users will get some satisfaction from becoming a Cloth King or Twitter Tycoon, I see little point in this feature.

I?m also surprised that the Clothapp blog isn?t better built in to the Cloth app itself. When users upload a photo to Cloth, they can opt to send the image to the Cloth blog, which displays all of the user-provided images. You can only access this from the ?Visit Clothapp.com? button in the app?s settings panel, which opens a non-iPhone optimized version of the site. Yes, the point of this app is personal cataloging, but much of the fun of taking the time to photograph your OOTD is in seeing what others are wearing, too.

Cloth makes the claim it?ll ?Unlock your closet.? I?m not entirely convinced fashionistas will flock to the service, but Cloth?s ease of use and smart interface means users will get what they pay for, at the minimum.

'Hunger Games' Soundtrack Lands Taylor Swift, Arcade Fire

Decemberists and Civil Wars also on the disc.
By Gil Kaufman

The soundtrack to "The Hunger Games"
will feature a bumper crop of new and unreleased songs by Taylor Swift, the Arcade Fire and the Decemberists.

The album will be produced by Grammy-winning producer T Bone Burnett and released before the movie hits theaters on March 23. Burnett and the group the Civil Wars got together to write an original tune for the CD with Swift, the first single, "Safe and Sound," which was released to iTunes on December 23. The tune shot to #1 on the iTunes singles list within 24 hours of release.

Also serving up fresh tracks are the Arcade Fire, who collaborated with Burnett on "Horn of Plenty," and the Decemberists, who've offered up the original song "One Engine." The rest of the lineup has not been released, but according to a press release the soundtrack will feature all new songs based on themes that figure into the movie's storyline.

Oscar-winning composer Danny Elfman recently exited the film, citing scheduling issues as he works to finish up the music for "Dark Shadows" and "Men in Black 3." He was replaced by James Newton Howard, who is responsible for dozens of famous scores, including "Batman Begins."

Inspired by the best-selling young-adult novel by Suzanne Collins, "The Hunger Games" follows the path of 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who is chosen to compete in a vicious televised tournament in which 24 teenagers from a post-apocalyptic society fight to the death for the entertainment of the masses. The film also stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, as well as Woody Harrelson and rocker Lenny Kravitz.

Lawrence will not only star in the movie, but she will also lend her vocals
to the soundtrack. Producer Burnett had high praise for her singing, telling MTV it was "beautiful. She did great. She's singing great. Killer actor too."

Fans are totally geeked about the new big-screen adaptation that could be the next-generation "Twilight" series, which is why we put together our list of the top 10 "Games" moments of 2011.

Japan's PM reaches out to China on North Korea (AP)

BEIJING ? Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda wrapped up a trip to Beijing on Monday where he sought China's cooperation in promoting stability in North Korea after the death of its longtime leader Kim Jong Il.

Noda's first official visit to Beijing since taking power in September would normally have centered on bilateral issues, such as squabbles over islands claimed by both countries, but the death of Kim on Dec. 17 and the announcement of his son Kim Jong Un as the country's "supreme leader" has shifted the focus.

Noda, the first foreign leader to meet with China's leaders since Kim's death, emphasized the need to get stalled six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear weapons program back on track.

"Strengthening our countries' relations is necessary in order to solve regional and global issues," Noda said when he met President Hu Jintao on Monday, a day after holding talks with his counterpart, Wen Jiabao.

On Sunday, Noda pointed to the new situation in East Asia, saying "it is very timely to exchange views with the host of the six-party talks and the country with the most influence on North Korea," referring to China.

His visit to China was planned before Kim's death was announced Dec. 19.

When asked whether China could confirm that Kim Jong Un was in complete control of North Korea, Japanese Foreign Ministry press secretary Yutaka Yokoi would say only that Noda and Wen had discussed the situation on the Korean peninsula.

After meeting with Wen, Noda told reporters that the two leaders had agreed to cooperate to try to achieve stability on the peninsula.

"We shared the understanding that denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and its peace and stability not only benefits Japan and China but serves the common interest of all neighboring countries," said Noda.

Yokoi said that a Chinese leader has been invited to visit Japan in the first half of next year, but would not say who.

Japan does not have diplomatic relations with North Korea, while China is the impoverished country's most important supporter and supplies it with food aid and much of its energy resources.

The six-party talks, which include the two Koreas, the United States and Russia, as well as China and Japan, are aimed at disarming North Korea of its nuclear capability. Pyongyang walked out on the talks in 2009 ? and exploded a second nuclear-test device ? but now wants to re-engage.

Last year, North Korea was blamed for two military attacks on South Korea that heightened tensions on the peninsula.

Yokoi said China would consider Noda's request to lease pandas for a zoo in Sendai to help cheer up the northern Japanese region as it recovers from the earthquake and tsunami disasters in March.

Noda and Wen noted that 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between their countries and said both nations want to improve relations to mark that occasion.

Officials from both countries also signed memorandums of understanding on youth exchanges and setting up a clean energy and environmental protection investment fund.

Japan and China have a list of sensitive topics they are trying to make progress on, including fights over islands and energy disputes in the East China Sea.

Pantry gets food to pets of needy seniors | Boise, Garden City ...

Bobbie Gardner is an animal lover who is allergic to dogs and cats. She no longer owns pets, but she knows firsthand that they are cherished companions for many.

The Boise grandma is part of a group of volunteers trying to prevent homebound seniors in the Treasure Valley from losing their pets because they can?t afford to feed them. Once a month, she loads up her Suzuki with bags of donated pet food and delivers it to a half-dozen or more residents in Boise and Meridian.

?They?re very appreciative,? said Gardner, a nurse who works part time. ?They say it?s so important to them to keep their animals with them, and if we didn?t help them they wouldn?t be able to.?

The pet food delivery service ? run through the Idaho Humane Society ? is done in collaboration with Elks Meals on Wheels. Volunteers with Meals on Wheels deliver meals each day to 800 seniors in Ada County, including 400 homebound seniors and 400 at dining centers.

?For many of these people who receive Meals on Wheels, it is their only daily source of nutrition,? said Grant Jones, development director for Elks Meals on Wheels. ?It?s very critical that they eat all of that and that they don?t have to make a choice between themselves and their pet.?

The Idaho Humane Society has been assisting with pet food donation for needy seniors for years. In late 2008, the nonprofit launched a separate delivery service to ease the burden on Meals on Wheels volunteers.

?It was just asking them to do a lot extra. In some cases, that pet food is very heavy, very bulky,? Jones said. ?It just made it easier.?

At about the same time, shelter officials began to notice that many families were giving up their pets due to financial hardship.

?We determined that people were using food stamps to buy food for their pets ? tuna for their cats, little wieners for their dogs,? said Christine Wiersema, development director at the Idaho Humane Society. ?That?s taking food away from the family, so that?s not good.

?We reassessed things because we want to keep these families together,? Wiersema said. That?s when the shelter?s Pet Food Pantry was launched.

The pantry, housed in a construction trailer, is also a collection site for the Meals on Wheels pet food delivery service. They collect and distribute about 7,000 pounds of pet food a month.

?This could be my whole job,? Wiersema said. All of the food is donated by the community or purchased with cash donations.

There are pet food donation drop-offs at 60 locations in the Valley, including Zamzows stores and veterinary offices.

Some businesses hold food drives to help out. The Idaho Athletic Club held four drives this year and donated 10,000 pounds of pet food. Hewlett-Packard employees contributed 640 pounds and $780 in cash.

Twice a month, about 100 families pick up food to feed for up to four pets. They may receive the donated pet food for up to six months.

The Meals on Wheels pet food delivery service is separate from the food pickup operation. It currently provides food to 225 animals at residences throughout Ada County.

About 10 to 15 volunteers gather the first week of the month to pack the pet food into their vehicles. They spend an hour or two delivering it over the next day or so.

Wiersema said many of the seniors in the delivery program have older and/or special-needs pets. Grants from two foundations allow the shelter to offer medical treatment and other care for those animals.

While talking to one pet owner, volunteer Gardner discovered that he was living in frigid temperatures due to a broken furnace. She called local agencies and businesses until she found one that would work with him on a payment plan for a new furnace.

In that way, the pet food delivery service is about so much more than pets, Wiersema said.

?It?s just one more touch from the community ? that sense we can all take care of each other,? she said.

Occupy Wall Street becomes highly collectible (AP)

NEW YORK ? Occupy Wall Street may still be working to shake the notion it represents a passing outburst of rage, but some establishment institutions have already decided the movement's artifacts are worthy of historic preservation.

More than a half-dozen major museums and organizations from the Smithsonian Institution to the New-York Historical Society have been avidly collecting materials produced by the Occupy movement.

Staffers have been sent to occupied parks to rummage for buttons, signs, posters and documents. Websites and tweets have been archived for digital eternity. And museums have approached individual protesters directly to obtain posters and other ephemera.

The Museum of the City of New York is planning an exhibition on Occupy for next month.

"Occupy is sexy," said Ben Alexander, who is head of special collections and archives at Queens College in New York, which has been collecting Occupy materials. "It sounds hip. A lot of people want to be associated with it."

To keep established institutions from shaping the movement's short history, protesters have formed their own archive group, stashing away hundreds of cardboard signs, posters, fliers, buttons, periodicals, documents and banners in temporary storage while they seek a permanent home for the materials.

"We want to make sure we collect it from our perspective so that it can be represented as best as possible," said Amy Roberts, a library and information studies graduate student at Queens College who helped create the archives working group.

The archives group has been approached by institutions seeking to borrow or acquire Occupy materials. Roberts said they are discussing donating the entire collection to the Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at New York University. Tamiment declined to comment.

The library's collection is among the country's oldest of materials on socialism, communism and social protest movements in the U.S.

A handful of protesters began camping out in September in a lower Manhattan plaza called Zuccotti Park, outraged at Wall Street excess and income inequality; they were soon joined by others who set up tents and promised to occupy "all day, all night." Similar camps sprouted in dozens of cities nationwide and around the world. Many were forcibly cleared.

Much of the frenzied collection by institutions began in the early weeks of the protests. In part, they were seeking to collect and preserve as insurance against the possibility history might be lost ? not an unusual stance by archivists.

What appears to be different is the level of interest from mainstream institutions across a wide geographic spectrum and the new digital-only ventures that have sprung up to preserve the movement's online history.

The lavish attention poured on the liberal-leaning movement has not gone unnoticed by conservatives.

Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group, blogged sarcastically under its "Corruption Chronicles" about the choice by the Smithsonian to document Occupy.

"It looks like it's taxpayer-funded hoarding, as opposed to rigorous historical collecting," said Tom Fitton, president of the organization.

The Smithsonian said its American history collection also now includes materials related to the massive tea party rally against health care reform in March 2010 and materials from the American Conservative Union's Washington, D.C., conference in February.

The Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University launched OccupyArchive.org in mid-October on a hunch that it could become historically important. So far, it has about 2,500 items in its online database, including compressed files of entire Occupy websites from around the country and hundreds of images scraped from photo-sharing site Flickr.

"This kind of social movement is probably more interesting to me, to be honest about it. And also so much of it is happening digitally. On webpages. On Twitter," said Sheila Brennan, the associate director of public projects. "I guess I didn't see as much of that with the tea party."

Curators and those in charge of collections at institutions said it was not too soon to think about preserving elements of the Occupy movement.

"We like to collect things as they are happening before the artifacts go away," said Esther Brumberg, senior curator of collections for the Museum of Jewish Heritage in lower Manhattan.

Brumberg said the museum had approached "Occupy Judaism" co-organizer Daniel Sieradski about a poster he had done for a Yom Kippur prayer service for protesters at Zuccotti Park that drew hundreds of people. The poster shows the silhouetted fiddler image from the Jewish musical "Fiddler on the Roof" astride the Wall Street bull.

Sieradski said it made sense that his poster should end up in the museum's permanent collection.

"What I think is great is that they are actually looking to build their collection around contemporary American Jewish history and maybe broaden what their offerings are to the public so that they can tell a more complete story," he said.

While there are no immediate plans to use the poster in an exhibition, Brumberg called it "just one of a number of instances of Jewish activism" that they are interested in and are trying to collect.

The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History gave a similar explanation for sending staff to Zuccotti Square during the encampment, where they were spotted picking up materials. The museum said it was part of its tradition of documenting how Americans participate in a democracy. It declined to allow staff to be interviewed.

"Historians like to take the long view and see how things play out," said spokeswoman Valeska Hilbig in an email, adding that staff wouldn't feel "comfortable" discussing the protests until some time had passed.

Staff at the Robert W. Woodruff Library at Emory University set up a system to download and archive tweets about Occupy. So far, they have harvested more than 5 million tweets from more than 600,000 unique Twitter users. Ultimately the database will be made available to scholars, said Stewart Varner, the digital scholarship coordinator at the library.

The New York Public Library has added Occupy periodicals to its collection and is considering obtaining some protest ephemera.

And the Internet Archive, a massive online library of free digital books, audio and texts, has opened a mostly user-generated collection about the movement. As of Friday, the Occupy collection included more than 2,000 items, while its "Tea Party Movement" collection had fewer than 50.

Unlike other institutions focused only on collecting, the Museum of the City of New York is planning a photography exhibition on Occupy at its South Street Seaport Museum offshoot when it reopens in January.

Chief curator Sarah Henry said the museum will also include materials on the movement in a new gallery opening in the spring that focuses on social activism in New York City.

The New-York Historical Society has collected between 300 and 400 items from the movement, said Jean Ashton, the library director. Ashton recognized the contradiction inherent in an establishment institution collecting Occupy materials.

"There are probably people in Occupy Wall Street who the last thing they want is to have their materials in a library or museum somewhere," she said.

Roberts, the OWS member who is on the archives working group, said it was good that such institutions want to document the movement. However, she said they would prefer the institutions collaborate with the participants. "We know more about the movement and the stories behind the materials that have been collected," she said.

Russia opposition activist to be held 10 more days (AP)

MOSCOW ? A prominent Russian opposition activist had barely half an hour of freedom Sunday before being sentenced to 10 more days in jail ? making it the 14th time this year he's been detained.

The decision by a Moscow court late Sunday to find Left Front leader Sergei Udaltsov guilty of a charge of resisting police came a day after Russia witnessed the largest protest rally in its post-Soviet history. As demonstrators vented frustration Saturday with the scandal-marred parliamentary election of Dec. 4 that left Vladimir Putin's United Russia party in control, many prominent figures called for Udaltsov's release.

How the Kremlin chooses to deal with Udaltsov could prove a litmus test for how it approaches the opposition in the coming days. During Putin's decade-plus long tenure as president and prime minister, opposition activists have faced numerous crackdowns, but their cause appears to have been boosted by allegations of fraud during the recent election.

The Left Front leader was due to be released Sunday from a hospital, where he was being treated as he served the final days of his previous sentence. Udaltsov, who had been held since election day on claims of staging an unsanctioned rally, had spent much of the month on a hunger strike.

Found guilty of resisting police, Udaltsov was escorted back to the hospital Sunday night after he felt unwell in court.

"He was so stressed out that he fell ill," Udaltsov's lawyer, Nikolay Polozov, said.

Prominent opposition leaders came to the court to support Udaltsov. Many have referred to his constant detentions as political harassment. The Left Front leader has spent at least 50 days in jail this year.

The court on Sunday found that Udaltsov resisted police on Oct. 24 while being detained outside the Central Election Committee's building.

A video of his detention, filmed by the Associated Press Television, shows the activist arrive on a bicycle and later talk to reporters.

Udaltsov was telling the press that he had come out to the election committee's headquarters to stage a one-man picket, which requires no sanction from authorities. Shortly afterwards, police came and took Udaltsov away. Udaltsov did not appear to be putting resistance.

Udaltsov's lawyer said they would appeal the verdict.

Holiday Greetings Bring Troops Closer to Home

Holiday Greetings Bring Troops Closer to Home

By Terri Moon Cronk
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Dec. 23, 2011 ? Flick on just about any TV or radio station in the coming days, and you?re likely to catch a broadcast of a local service member deployed or stationed overseas sending holiday wishes to loved ones and friends back home.

The Joint Hometown News Service produces thousands of these TV and radio messages each year through its popular holiday greetings program.

The format for the broadcasts is simple: service members who volunteer to participate look into the camera and give their name and location, followed by an extemporaneous holiday greeting.

Some of the troops? messages are quite emotional, Natasha Schleper, broadcast chief of the news service, said, especially those from young service members on their first deployments.

Producers edit the raw footage down to about 15 seconds before disseminating them to media outlets.

The greetings are a hit with media outlets anxious to air greetings from local service members deployed or stationed overseas. More than 1,500 TV stations and almost 3,000 radio stations subscribe to the distribution list, officials said. ESPN and several cable news outlets are among the subscribers.

Some radio and TV stations go the extra step to telephone service members? families in their communities before their loved one?s message airs to be sure they don?t miss it. Rick Blackburn, director of the Joint Hometown News Service, calls that outreach ?remarkable.?

To deliver those greetings in time for the holidays, Joint Hometown News Service crews started early and fanned out around the world. In addition to gathering greetings from service members and their families from Europe to Asia, they tap into American Forces Network resources to cover troops on the front lines.

This year, most of the greetings were recorded during a 30-day period and the raw footage was edited and uploaded on a server for subscriber access, Schleper reported.

One deployed soldier who previously was part of the hometown news team, Army Staff Sgt. Kimberly Cooper-Williams, volunteered to help again this year. She personally oversaw the taping of 430 greetings from service members throughout Kuwait within a four-day period.

The fruits of the crews? labors began showing up on radio and TV stations during Thanksgiving week.

On Nov. 23, for example, CNN?s Anderson Cooper aired several of the messages during his national daytime program.

Earlier this month, another holiday greeting from a Marine deployed to Afghanistan was aired between periods at a NHL hockey game on the coliseum's jumbotron video screens, to the surprise and delight of his attending family in the crowd.

The impact of these messages -- first on the camera crews, then on the families and audiences at home -- continues long after the messages air, Schleper said.

?That?s someone?s child, someone?s father or mother who?s away from home, not enjoying the holidays in their own living rooms with their families,? she said.

?The greetings are an important reminder to people at home, many of them caught up in the hustle-bustle of getting ready for the holidays, that as they go about their business, the troops are out there, continuing to defend the nation.?

GoDaddy CEO: ?There Has To Be Consensus About The Leadership Of The Internet Community?

gduIn a brief interview with TechCrunch, GoDaddy's new CEO, Warren Adelman, did a little damage control relating to the company's highly public reversal of its position on SOPA. GoDaddy had previously issued a strong statement of support for the controversial bill, which you can find here. The last day has seen a growing grassroots rejection of the company and its position in the form of a boycott. But today brought a statement from the company apparently doing a complete about-face. Adelman noted that he had "been CEO of this company for all of one week," and that the complaints and feedback had grown just over the last 24 hours, and it is during this time that he became involved. He said that the feedback made him realize they should "take a step back and look at the current legislation." Of course, the outcry against SOPA and its twin in the Senate goes back much further.

Florida Man Tortured and Pepper-Sprayed to Death by Police

It has been two and half years since 62-year old Nick Christie was tortured and pepper-sprayed to death by police at the Lee County Jail. Although the medical examiner ruled his death a homicide, the law enforcement officers who kept him strapped naked to a chair and then pepper sprayed him until he died have not been charged in his death.

On January 20, 2010, the Injury Board?s National News Desk reported that Nick Christie?s wife, Joyce Christie, and her son, were planning to file a federal lawsuit because the police violated her husband?s constitutional rights. The article describes what allegedly happened when Christie was arrested for trespassing:

Christie, 62, was arrested last March after traveling from Ohio to Fort Myers while suffering, what his widow describes as a mental breakdown. Arrested twice for disorderly conduct and trespassing, Nick Christie was pepper sprayed ten times over the course of his 43-hour custody.

Suffering from emphysema, COPD, back and heart problems, the jail staff said his medical files were not available or immediately sought at the time of his arrest. But DiCello says Christie gave his medical history and list of medications to the jail days earlier during his first encounter with law enforcement.

His medication list was found in the back pocket of his pants when Christie?s personal effects were returned to his widow.

Sometime between the time he was arrested on March 27, 2009 around 2:00 p.m., and March 31 at1:23 p.m. when he was pronounced dead, Christie had been sprayed with ten blasts of pepper spray, also known as OC (Oleo-resin Capsicum), which is a derivative of cayenne pepper.

The officers involved in the incident say that Christie was ?combative, despite the fact he was restrained in a chair so he allegedly wouldn?t spit at his jailers.? However, other inmates on the cell block tell a different story. They say that there was excessive use of pepper spray, his whole head was turning purple, he was gasping for air and was telling the officers that he couldn?t breathe and that he had a heart condition. (source: Injury Board)

According to the medical examiner, the death was a homicide caused by the stress that the restraints and repeated use of pepper spray placed on his heart. However, the State Attorney?s office decided there was no wrongdoing, therefore the officers involved in the incident were never charged in the homicide. In a memo issued on January 5, 2010 that is lacking in any detail, Assistant State Attorney Dean R. Plattner wrote:

The evidence presented in this case does not legally prove beyond a reasonable doubt that any individual or group of jail personnel had any intent to kill Nicholas Christie, or otherwise committed an act of murder. Even considering the lowest level of criminal homicide, manslaughter, the evidence does not prove that such criminal offense was committed.

According to Joyce Christie?s attorney, Nick DiCello, it is shocking that the state attorney came to this conclusion. Even if they thought there was probable cause that there was a crime, the case could have gone forward.

Now, Fox News has obtained a photo of the incident, which ?shows the Ohio man restrained inside the Lee County Jail with his body covered in pepper spray.? Di Cello explains that the ?photo is a picture of a man who is strapped to a chair naked inside a jail for hours with a hood over his face. That evokes thoughts of being tortured.?

DiCello told the Injury News Board:

Humanity has failed here. And now they aren?t going to address the failure. Us as a people, we need to recognize we?ve all failed and make it right, not ?Let?s just move on from this failure.? People shouldn?t do this to people. Nothing could warrant the treatment and death this guy experienced.

A 62-yr-old retiree strapped to a chair and died. I don?t get it.

The wrongful death lawsuit is scheduled for the middle of 2012.

Parents May Hold Key to Healthy Weight in Hispanic Kids (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Dec. 23 (HealthDay News) -- Parents of overweight Hispanic children are willing to make food and lifestyle changes that will benefits their kids' health, a new study suggests.

The findings may help improve efforts to combat the childhood obesity epidemic among Hispanic Americans, the largest and fastest-growing ethnic group in the United States, said the researchers at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

"Almost half of all Latino kids are either overweight or obese," senior study author Dr. Glenn Flores, a professor of pediatrics and clinical sciences, said in a medical center news release. "It's an important issue in terms of our future generations. If we intervene early enough, we won't have obese adults."

In the study, the researchers asked 19 Hispanic parents about their children's dietary and exercise habits and roadblocks to making healthier choices.

"Themes regarding the most important things parents can do to help overweight children lose weight included encouragement, not making the child feel left out, the whole family eating healthy and the parent setting a good example," said Flores, who is also head of general pediatrics at UT Southwestern and chief of general pediatrics at Children's Medical Center Dallas.

The parents and children also tasted Hispanic foods prepared with healthy alternatives, such as tortillas made with vegetable oil instead of lard, beans made without lard, healthy-grain enchiladas with low-fat cheese, baked fish, skinless chicken breasts and brown rice.

The participants had favorable responses to all of the foods, with the exception of brown rice instead of white rice.

In addition to healthier foods, the parents said other actions that would help their children lose weight included cutting down on portion sizes and second helpings, drinking more water, being more physically active, making exercise a family activity, and limiting time in front of the television or computer.

Barriers to increased physical activity include cost, time constraints and neighborhood safety, according to the parents.

"Sometimes getting kids into organized sports in the inner city is very difficult," Flores said. "The kids usually want it, but it's not always easy to find."

The study was released online in advance of publication in an upcoming print issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

Dream Scar: A Grand Adventure Awaits

The World as it is Now

However serene the planet earth may appear, it must be noted that this is a facade. Civilizations on this planet are in constant turmoil, whether it is with themselves or against other nations. For as long as all can remember, war has been a catalyst in creation and destruction here, only recently have the horns of war silenced. All nations have agreed to a cease fire, giving the world momentary peace.

With war gone, the world somehow still remains as perilous as before. Many starve and suffer from the battles of before. Recuperating villages are now ideal prey. Men, women, and children of all types are disappearing. Vigilante justice is the only protection the weak are offered. Greedy tyrants hold seats of power only to have them ripped away by an equally underhanded foes.

This world is draped in eternal darkness, one can only assume such an unlucky fate was destined. In times like this people cling to religion and false idols as a last hope. There is talk that of a judgment day, a day when the mighty Shroud will return and save those worthy. To most this is highly unlikely, but one rumor that may hold truth, is that someone has found the missing Relics of Sovereignty.

Truth or Tale

Everyone at one time or another has heard the story of the mighty Shroud, beings so powerful that they could literally bend the earth to their will. If they wanted light, they but wave their hand and high in the sky, a large orb would reveal itself to shower them in rays of warm, soul-enriching light. They could stop the sands, move mountains and make it rain for days -- this was all possible because of the magically imbued Relics of Sovereignty: items which control the world around them.

This secret was soon discovered by their three most trusted servants The Engineer, The Warrior, and The Mage. Together, they plotted to take away these relics and rule themselves. But, the Shroud discovered their plans and decided that if they would not be allowed to wield such power, no one would. So, they destroyed the relics and left the planet, but not before punishing them and stripping them of most of their powers. It is because of their greed, the world is covered in darkness, barren, and cold.

However, some believe that they did not destroy the relics. Instead, they scattered and hid each one, to one day be found by someone worthy of wielding the godly powers. To do so, they must posses the Blank Compass, which will reveal the location of the Harbinger, the Six Gears of Life, and the Eternity Engine. Once all the items are brought together in the Dream Scar Palace, (the old Utopian home of the Shroud) power like no mere mortal has ever wielded will be theirs.

A Lesson In History

At one point in history, every race co-existed on the surface level of earth. The humans, thinking themselves superior, subjugated the Ravein, making them their servants and slaves. It wasn't long before the ravein began to revolt and began to look for assistance. This brought them to the worship of the magical subterranean Majnun as gods. After coming to an agreement with the Majnun, the two joined forces and sought to free the ravein from the oppressive humans. In turn, this lead to war between the two factions.

In the end, the humans gave up their conquest and focused their resources on other goals. The humans had decided to isolate themselves from the rest of the world by propelling their greatest city into the sky. They exiled those who were not human or for the advancement of the human race, from their city and began a period of intense isolation. During this time a dictatorship formulated itself under the reign of The Architect, the sole person responsible for the advancements in technology and self proclaimed 'Forger of Human Destiny'. Because of this, the man came to be worshiped as a god.

Soon, alchemy was developed and everyone had tenuous peace with everyone.

In more recent history, the Ravein stopped worshiping the Majnun as gods, realizing that though powerful, they were no such thing at all. The Majunun have basically been forced to agree to a treaty with humanity, because their alchemic science has proved an apt match for magic and they are far more numerous besides. The Ravein by and large want nothing to do with anyone who isn't living on the surface, though this does include some humans and a few Majnun... they trade with everyone, though, and the ground faction is the most populous.

Criminals known as Pirates have begun roaming the lands. Viewed as outlaws by all, they are apprehended on sight and punished for crimes committed against any faction. The most notorious of the bunch have bounties on their head which can be collected by anyone with skill enough to bring them in dead or alive. The emergence of pirates in a world of peace, has given the factions something to unite against and aim their frustrations; making them a necessary evil.

The Pirate Crew

The Asura, a group of nobodies turned notorious pirate crew overnight. They are your usual rag-tag, underdogs looking to gain immense wealth and fame as they become legends in their trade. It's hard to believe that they were once a gathering of criminal and outlaw acquaintances, who knew nothing of each other -- the name Asura, would mean nothing to them until later united by (my character).

Unlike other pirate crews, the Asura were specialists who often fancied themselves treasure hunters. They made their living smuggling and stealing goods from cargo ships; anything involving theft, stealth, and guile was their type of business. But, they were not the ruthless, murdering pirates who raped and pillaged small defenseless towns and fired upon any ship that dared to cross their path. However, doing what must be done in order to accomplish a job, is a different story. You could consider them good pirates, if you don't mind them robbing you blind; better than being dead, though?

The crew began their accession to infamy after stealing or attaining a prized warship. Named Decadence, this is the warship of which transports the crew faster than any vessel, ship, and/or blimp in existence. How they obtained such a ship is unknown. They claim to have discovered it, but others rumor it belonged to the Majnun. No matter its origin, it now belongs to the Asura and it is the reason behind their many successful heists.

After acquiring Decadence, the Asura would continue their streak and increase their reputation for having the best equipment. It was like they had a knack for finding premium loot; but a reliable intel network, didn't hurt their endeavors either. What they didn't keep for themselves, they would sell to the highest bidders. These deals would even bring them face-to-face with the very people who considered them outlaws and wanted them behind bars. At the end of the day though, it was just business and both parties respected that.

The story will resume around their more recent exploits, around five years later, after the crew's start. In midst of a mission, is where the story will begin. Having heard rumors that a certain Sky Empire Transpo-Walker is carrying a priceless artifact, of which is to be delivered to The Architect, the crew jumped at the chance to have it for themselves. Because security is higher than normal, the mission is to be carried out stealthily until the object of value is in their possession. They will escape under cover fire from Decadence. By the time the Empire realizes that the item has been stolen and that the assault was just a rouge, they will be long gone.
