LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. ?? The weather promises to be a major challenge Friday for the nearly 2,000 firefighters working on the High Park Fire west of Fort Collins.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the fire zone and most of the rest of Colorado because record hot temperatures, strong winds and very low humidity are in the forecast.

Containment of the High Park Fire ?the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history- has improved to 55 percent: a number fire managers hope goes up Friday, despite the fire continuing to grow in size.

As of Friday, it had burned an estimated 68,200 acres.

Poudre Park residents received 164 notifications permitting them to return home after 12 p.m. Thursday. That area did not include Unger Mountain Road, Falls Gulch Road and King?s Canyon Road, said Sherrif?s office spokeswoman Jennifer Hillman.

191 homes have been destroyed, but incident commanders believe that number will continue to climb as more areas are surveyed. One person has died in the fire.

The cost of fighting the fire has surged to $19.6 million with close to 1,859 firefighters battling the blaze in shifts. Operations are underway 24 hours a day.

Managers believe they will have full containment of the High Park Fire by Sunday, July 8.
